"Although difficult to find the time to attend the modules, it is definitely worth setting this program as a priority.  Each module I attended added value to my understanding and knowledge of government, allowed me to build networks across Ministries and gave me practical applications to my current assignment.  The caliber of the module content and the quality of learning environment are exceptional."

"Terrific and enjoyable. It was a wonderful tool for professional development and personal growth. SEMDP modules such as the "Ethics in the Alberta Public Service - Module 13" or "The Legal Environment - Module 4" explored some of the profound challenges that decision makers face and must resolve in order to be effective players in the Alberta Public Service. The networking opportunity was tremendous. I would ungrudgingly recommend the Program."

"Attending the SEMDP was beneficial for my professional and personal development. The quality of the courses and instruction was excellent. I found the balance between theory and practical application appropriate for my learning style and interest level. The program provides a broader and richer perspective on the business of the Government of Alberta. The opportunity to network, share ideas and wrestle with challenges that face managers within the public service can only serve to enhance one's performance. I plan to pursue other courses in the program I have not yet had the opportunity to participate in."

"Module 5 - Leading and Managing Change - I have just completed a very topical module on Leading and Managing Change. This and all of my previous modules have given me a propitious and unique opportunity to enhance my personal performance, and develop my leadership skills in a collegiate, cross-ministerial and interactive atmosphere, second to none. Credit goes to all the top-notched experienced instructors."

They provided the participants with valuable information to enhance their personal lives from a physical and mental well being perspective. Health without wealth is far superior to wealth without health."

" I really enjoyed the SEMDP courses as they were productive and efficient. In my opinion, the value of instructor led training comes primarily from the instructor, and both organizations (Alberta Government and University of Alberta) have done a fabulous job in assembling well-known staff teaching these classes."

Andrew Terefe

"SEMDP is a well designed program. The modules that I attended provided an excellent overview of key issues facing managers in the Alberta Public Service as well as ideas that can be applied to enhancing organizational and personal performance. I enjoyed the experience and discussions with colleagues from other ministries."

"Module 3 - Leading and Managing Change - Taking the module "Leading and Managing Change" should be more than a must for all government managers and senior staff.  Is there anyone not facing change?  I have used the process and insights learned at this module for the past 3 years.  For large scope change management initiatives, I found that the A (awareness), U (understanding), A (acceptance but doesn't mean agreement) and I (internalizing) concept has helped me ensure that I reach all interested groups at the right level. I have created a matrix using this concept."

"Module 10 - Public Consultation and Communication - Consultation is a term used by most of us and I know that there are many different uses. Take the "Consultation and Communications" module and learn that when you give a presentation to a group you have not consulted them but just informed them. Words like consultation, engagement and partnerships take on whole new meanings. If you are going to be working with groups, this module will help you do it better."

"Module 4 - The Legal Environment - Working with legislation or policies or groups that are very familiar with their rights, the module "The Legal Environment" will give you some understanding of areas to avoid. I highly recommend this module as in addition to administrative law principles, it has an excellent overview and discussion on aboriginal rights."

"Module 14 - Building Effective Teams and Working with Others - Have to put a team together or just been appointed to a team as the lead, the module "Building Effective Teams and Working with Others" is a must. Simple to execute ideas and processes are presented in this module. You will build teams during this module and see that it actually works. I liked the exercises as you can reuse them or know where to get them. They have helped me build new teams and helped me figure out ways to make existing teams work better together."

"Module 13 - The Responsible Public Servant: Ethics in the Alberta Public Service - If you are in a position of accountability, you need to take "The Responsible Public Servant: Ethics in the Alberta Public Service". This course doesn't give you any hard answers but it will make you think. I found this to be one of the more valuable courses as it gave me comfort that I am on the right track."

"Module 6 - Transformational Leadership - I have found all the courses I have taken through the SEMDP valuable. The course that has been most beneficial and useful even after 3 years was the Transformational Leadership course. The principles of good leadership modeled in this course can always be used throughout your career and development at home and work."
